4th Grade Musicians Accompany Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra

November 2011

Wednesday, November 9th, ten FCWC students performed in concert with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra during the Young People’s Concert at West Jefferson High School Auditorium. David Torns was the conductor.

They performed the “New World Symphony” by Anonin Dvorak on recorders—plastic, flute-like, woodwind instruments used by many band directors for beginner band classes. Fingering is similar to other woodwind instruments. These instruments are presently being employed in the best elementary level General Music Class curriculums, including here at FCWCS.

These talented musicians are members of Mrs. T. Daigle’s 4th Grade Class. Chasiti, Derricka, Herchele, Quincy, Joshua, Raheem, Ivan, Zhakiay, Jared, and Rondell are learning to play the recorder under the direction of Vocal Music teacher Ms. K. Wright.

1st High School Fair Night Big Hit

November 2011

Eighth graders are already making decisions about next year. The counseling and school’s administration decided to make their task a little easier by sponsoring High School Fair Night.

Students and parents were invited to return to school at 5:00 p.m. to talk to recruiters from city schools such as Sci Academy, O.P. Walker, NOCCA, St. Augustine High, St. Mary’s Academy, Edna Karr, Miller-McCoy, Warren Easton, New Orleans Military & Maritime Academy, N.O. Chapter for Science & Math and Lake Area High School.

It was one-stop shopping for parents and students, about a dozen of the city’s best schools under the FCWCS roof. It allowed consumers—parents and students—to do comparison shopping. Applications, brochures, flyers and mementos were distributed to students, with each school trying to lure “Fannie’s Finest” to their campus next year.

We hope to make this a yearly event.

FCWCS Groundbreaking

FCWCS - Groundbreaking

A new physical plant is presently under construction. Slated to be completed in time for the start of the 2012-2013, our new $20,000,000 state-of-the-art building will contain about 95,000 square ft. of educational space for our students–containing a full gymnasium, cafeteria, two computer labs, a specialized art classroom, band and choir rooms, and 20 core classrooms. Our new facility will be a welcomed addition to the Bullard Corridor, between Chef Menteur Highway and 1-10.

Our student population has ranged between 350-550 pupils during our five years of existence. The new FCW Charter School will house two classes for each grade level in the future.

Marching Warriors Inaugural Season

O U T S T A N D I N G – S H O W

If you had the opportunity to see and hear the Marching Warriors (band, majorettes, cheerleaders, dance team, and flag twirlers) this Carnival Season you witnessed a very poised and polished group.

It appeared that our marching units have been performing for years, but this was their first year in the spotlight! The staff and volunteers have done a wonderful job of getting almost 100 of our students ready to perform in the streets of New Orleans and Metairie and at several district-sponsored events.

Our student performers have exceeded all expectations this season. We expect them to only improve as our band director, Thaddeus Petit, and his volunteers (Misters Webster and Vaughn) take them to the next level. Kudos also go the members of the FCWC School staff and parents who marched the many miles in parades and gave up their Saturdays to chaperone the groups for other performances.

To all of you, your hard work was apparent to anyone who saw you perform. We are looking forward to seeing you next season. Good job, good job!

Box Tops for Education Campaign Underway

Box Tops for Education Campaign Underway

For the third consecutive year, parents are asked to collect Box Tops for Education off household products. “Each coupon is worth 10 for the school’s treasury”, according to campaign leader Mrs. K. LeBlanc, our school’s librarian.

CEO/Principal Mrs. K. Batiste would like to see us double the $250.00 collected last year. Students should bring them to their homeroom teachers as they bring them from home.

The coupons’ proceeds will be used to buy pencils, paper, toner, sharpeners, and other enhancements for our school.
